Raise Your Cup

The World Cup kicks off today in South Africa, but a different kind of Cup will parade its way through the Loop this morning, cheered by thousands of hockey fans—the Stanley Cup, along with the NHL champion Chicago Blackhawks!

Here at Just Grapes, we’re raising our cups too. We’ve got the wines that can help keep the party going, and make up for all that lost time between 1961 and 2010. And no matter who your favorite Blackhawk is, we have a wine that matches their style:

#88 – Patrick Kane: Nimble and balanced, just like…

2007 ArborBrook Estate 777 Block Pinot Noir, Chehalem Mountains, Willamette Valley, Oregon [$20.79]

With an aromatic black cherry nose with hints of earthiness, this wine initially greets you with bright cherry and currant notes that transition into smoky hints of cola with subtle anise on the finish. Burgundian in style, this well-balanced and complex wine will continue to develop more nuanced flavors as it ages for another five to six years.

#19 – Jonathan Toews: Consistent and dependable, just like…

2005 Joseph Family Cabernet Sauvignon, Alexander Valley, Sonoma, California [$29.59]

A fine example of Alexander Valley Cabernet Sauvignon, showing the elegance and complexity that wines from that Sonoma County region can attain. Soft and intricate tannins, the wine shows a mélange of blackberry, current and cherry sweet dried herbs and smokey flavors that are delicious now, and should hold well for several years. 92 Pts – Wine Enthusiast

#33 – Dustin Byfuglien: Big and bold, just like…

2006 Babcock Under the Radar Syrah, Santa Barbara County, Central Coast, California [$10.79]

An impressive, flavorful Syrah at a price everyone can enjoy. A nose of plum and pepper gives way to meaty flavors of jam and bacon fat. This gem won’t be “under the radar” for long.
